We study natural convection in cavities and the qualitative changes brought about by rotating the cavity around an axis located far away from it. The long term objective of this project is the description and control of the flow inside slender cavities of aspect ratio (height to diameter) of two to four with solidification. We attempt to understand and modify with Coriolis force the dynamic processes occuring during crystal growth using the Czochralski method. We make experimental observations in rotating cavities using a centrifuge capable of generating up to 12 g.

Natural convection in a cavity with periodic temperature variation on opposite walls is proposed as a procedure for efficient mixing. We have made numerical calculations considering a cubic cavity with oscillatory temperature at the walls. Mixing efficiency is assessed with a Lagrangian Surface Tracking (LST) of a spherical shell deforming under the action of the flow.

Capillary boiling is used as a model for nucleate boilng at fractures or crevases. Boiling is achieved inside a capillary immersed in a water container by supplying extra heat with an electrical resistance. It has been experimentally observed that depending on the geometrical arrangement, the system can display periodicity, period doubling and ´chaotic behavior.
